Birthday Celebration 2011

My 57th birthday yesterday was a bit surreal, but nice. Doug had been marinating a sauerbraten beef roast for 3 days, and there was much anticipation in the air. We ate brunch at Relish in Bettystown, which was absolutely fantastic. Their truly unbeatable recipe: brown bread with chili relish on top, pouched eggs on that with cooked mushrooms, and melted cheese over all. WOW. I was impressed.

But when Doug dished up his sauerbraten with gravy (thickened with ginger snap cookies), I was even more impressed. Doug had bought a 10-CD set of German popular music from the 50s, which we listened to all day long. As I said ... surreal!

Bobbie's birthday package arrived here exactly when we walked up the beach from our Bettystown brunch, and she as always had sent me reminders of home, including a framed photo of myself at age 15? riding my horse Joe.

I was painfully reminded of Mom's absence this year when Doug asked me if we had any napkins to use with dinner. Mom had always sent me birthday plates and napkins every June, but this year they were missing. A sad moment.

On the bright side, the weather was fabulous on my birthday. Today, June 3, it is even better.

Our trip to Belgium and our day in Amsterdam were very enjoyable.

Doug and I have been practicing our No. 5 Bach Brandenburg Concerto duet on a daily basis. Doug told me that this is one of his favorite pieces of music of all time, so I'm trying very hard to learn my part.

Sarah has decided to accept my offer to travel here June 30 - July 11. Doug will visit Lindsay during that time in NY. Ineke Voogd has decided to drop in on Ireland ... I haven't seen her in 40 years, so it could be fun. So we shall see what the future holds!

Next week my French teacher, Lucie, goes on vacation to Italy. I feel so happy to have a vacation from French myself. Ahhh ... But I continue to be intrigued by the French way of perceiving the universe.

I have been reading Under the Dome by Stephen King, as I bought the sequel in Brussels (written in French). Big book, but spellbinding.
